Care Your Windshield

Preventing a rock chip from turning into a crack in your windshield is a matter of taking care of the damage fast.
If you hear a rock hit your windshield and don't see any damage, inspect the edges of you windshield for any missing glass or impact point. These types of damage requires immediate attention if you want to save your windshield. The edge of the windshield is a high stress area and has no place to go except to the less stressful area of the windshield.
That is why the damage becomes a crack! Most people don't realize they have the damage and suddenly they see a long crack!
Tips for preventing the crack from spreading!
Hot Weather Tips!
1. Contact a professional technician, not a glass shop! Most glass shops want to replace the glass and do not specialize in windshield repair. You do have a few exceptions! Look in the yellow pages under windshield repair!
2. Crack your side windows where you will have air flow so the windshield won't heat up! On Hot Days!
3. Do not wash your vehicle until you have the damage repaired! On a hot day the cold water and the hot glass will cause the crack to spread.
4. Do not slam you door! This will also cause the damage to spread!
Use the tips to prevent the damage from spreading until you can get it repaired.
Cold Weather Tips!
1. Do not turn on the defroster because the sudden heat from the defroster will cause the damage to spread.
2. Do not use a ice scrapper on the windshield when it has ice on it.
3. Do not pour hot water on the windshield because this will have the same affect as the defroster.
Another tip! Do not use Rain X or any protectant on the glass until you get the damage repaired! This can contaminated the break and might not repair properly!
